In general, five points or more would place the subject in an "alcoholic" category. Four points would be suggestive of alcoholism, three points or less would indicate the subject was not alcoholic.
Personal Note --
Had I been
administered the MAST on the day of my interview with
the EAP, I would have scored a total of 3 points
(non-alcoholic), due to a "yes" on questions 5 and 13
relative to my behavior on Oct. 8, 1997. Had I been
administered the MAST prior to that date, my score
would have been 0. But, if I were administered this
test today, my score would be 8 (in the "alcoholic"
range), due to a 5-point "yes" answer to question 8,
"Have you ever been to an AA meeting?".
Therefore, I have
been re-created as an "alcoholic" for all time,
by the actions of the EAP. (Personally, I think
question 8 is bizarre and gives serious credibility
problems to the MAST.) -- Rita
