SCORING SYSTEM:

In general, five points or more would place the subject in an "alcoholic" category. Four points would be suggestive of alcoholism, three points or less would indicate the subject was not alcoholic.

--------------------------

 Personal Note --

Had I been administered the MAST on the day of my interview with the EAP, I would have scored a total of 3 points (non-alcoholic), due to a "yes" on questions 5 and 13 relative to my behavior on Oct. 8, 1997. Had I been administered the MAST prior to that date, my score would have been 0. But, if I were administered this test today, my score would be 8 (in the "alcoholic" range), due to a 5-point "yes" answer to question 8, "Have you ever been to an AA meeting?".
Therefore, I have been re-created as an "alcoholic" for all time, by the actions of the EAP. (Personally, I think question 8 is bizarre and gives serious credibility problems to the MAST.) -- Rita
